[Carla does not like children, as a general rule, but her desire to have Rex looked after has trumped her natural inclination to scorn them at all times. She has to reach across her body in order to give the mutt a pat on the head.]
I don't know what he is. [Fins on his head and little wings tracing his forelegs.] We picked him up in the desert before coming back here.
[But she doesn't really want to talk about that either, so she gives Rex a nudge and tells him to go say hello. He obeys her easily, puppy feet prancing along to come mush his face at Mindy.]
There are two of you girls, you're going to be completely in charge of him. One of you needs to be here, every day. I'll give you Gazelle's number, you can work that out between yourselves.
[Mindy hasn't been a child in years. Physically, sure. Otherwise? Nope. It's not there at all. Still, she manages to give Rex a pat and a grin and a few 'hey, buddy! you're a good boy, aren't ya?' before turning her attention to Carla again. She listens, nodding politely. Memorizing details and the like.]
Okay. I'll call her later today and work out the details and then get back to you. How often does he eat and need to go out and all?
Right now he eats about three times a day. [Growing puppies need their chow.] If he's let out after each, he should be fine.
[Ugh, and now she has to get back up and limp into the kitchen. The apartment is mostly open, the kitchen looking onto the dining room which is set split-level just above the living room. She nudges open one of the cabinets, a medium sized bag of kibble in there. The fridge in the corner gets pulled open to display the shelf in the door with some cans of dog-glop. The dog bowl and water dish are already plainly visible, on the floor with a towel beneath them.]
This is what I have left. There will always be money lying around for more, independent of your pay.
[Back to her chair, all the while Rex has been nuzzling Mindy's shins. He's very needy after being here alone for a week and a half.]
Which will be in cash, paid at the start of the month, the same amount for both of you irregardless of who does what.
[She picks up a little brown envelope, one of two and offers it out, metallic things clinking inside. Several violet pieces and a key.]
[Mindy took the money, counting it quickly and carefully tucking the key in a small pocket. She planned on getting a chain for it after all was said and done here. And she was remembering everything. Where everything was, how much and when the dog ate. She was even smiling a bit, still petting Rex gently.]
I'll make sure things are even between Gazelle and myself.
[She doesn't want things to be unfair. One of them overpaid and one of them underpaid. At least she had that going for her.]
[It doesn't matter to Carla, as long as the dog gets taken care of and she's willing to throw as much money as necessary at the problem. Unwilling to get up again, Carla motions towards the far end of the couch where a leash is lying over the arm of it.]
